A hero who comes to close to the sun will lose his wings hardened with wax, and be thrown to the ground.” As has always been the running story from the beginning of the anime series, Brotherhood presents the reality that the two brothers will get their real bodies back soon – they hope at least, while other much dangerous things are happening not so far away from them.
Edward and Alphonse have never been closer than they are now, even if the ones taking care of them are worried about their health, and their responsibilities. These consist of protecting the Major from outside evil forces and hoping he can stop others getting to the transmutation circles.
They both have a hard time keeping the enemies at bay, but war is brewing across the world, and with the Fuhrer trying to dominate everyone in his path, it is pretty much up to the two brothers to save the people from the clutches of evil once again.
The story in its most basic form is about alchemy and after their original attempt at resurrecting their mother had failed badly, they have existed as bodiless entities since then in order to function as two fighting forces for the side of good tracking down the Philosopher’s Stone after Edward became a State Alchemist under the watchful eye of Roy Mustang.
And even though that is their main motivation, they have also used human transmutation and broken the law in that sense making them a couple of brothers who are always at odds against others including in these episodes, Father Cornello and his associate Rose who owes him for his saying that he would bring back her dead lover - this obviously being a lie to make her his servant in all he does.
Cornello considers the brothers using alchemy to bring their dead mother to life the most taboo thing of all - and wishes to destroy them for what he considers a sin against God and the church. This series touches on the memories the two brothers have of their mother and the events that took place when they first thought about bringing her back to life. Graphically excellent and well worth the wait for the English version to come out, although it has always been considered a serious anime for young adults, it also contains some very adult aspects.
And some comical elements that are a relief to the story mainly about the fun relationship between both brothers and the fact that Alphonse has a rather high voice for such a formidable-looking character in armour. Coming as a two-disc set containing episodes 1 - 13, it is one of the best known and most engaging anime to date standing alongside Naruto and Bleach as one of the most popular.
