Japanese anime fans set new Twitter record

Posted in : Gossips

(added few months ago!)

Last weekend, a Japanese television broadcast of classic Studio Ghibli anime Castle in the Sky prompted more than 11,349 tweets per second at a key moment in the movie. This perfect storm of tweets broke the previous record of 8,868 tweets per second after pop star Beyonce announced she was pregnant.

Japanese anime fans set new Twitter record

Over at Kotaku, there’s an in-depth explanation of how an animated movie released in 1986 could create such a flurry of tweets, but it boils down to this: there’s been a longstanding custom to write or say the word “balse” during a specific scene in the film. In recent years, the tradition has found its way to Twitter, and the popularity of the flashmob-like “Balse Festival” hit a peak during last weekend’s showing of the film. Previous airings of Castle in the Sky have wreaked havoc on some of Japan’s most prominent websites, but Twitter weathered the storm and emerged with a new record-holder.

Anime Update: 12/13/2011

Posted in : Anime Movies

(added few months ago!)

Today on Anime Update: we’ve got some awesome new releases from Funimation, news about the next film from The Girl Who Lept Through Time director Mamoru Hosoda, and more fun videos to share from our Japanese youtube searches!

Anime Update: 12/13/2011

After the huge success of Level 1.1 (you can read my review of 1.1 here), I’m personally looking forward to picking up 1.2 so that I can continue watching through the (original) episodes in all their high-definition, ultra-restored glory! Seriously, the episodes look and sound amazing, and I highly recommend this release to any Dragon Ball Z fans out there (especially if you didn’t purchase the DVDs and are looking to upgrade from VHS like I was!).

Summer Wars and The Girl Who Lept Through Time director Mamoru Hosoda will be bringing us the film Okami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki) next summer in Japan – July 2012. Both The Girl Who lept Through Time and Summer Wars received critical acclaim in Japan and were extremely well received overseas – so it will just be a matter of time before a North American distribution company scoops this release up for distribution sometime later in 2012 (or early 2013). The story itself is told over a period of 13 years – a tale of love, loss, and life for a family of “half-wolves.” The Japanese website and teaser image can be found here.

Finally on this week’s update:

I’m happy to bring you another video from the depths of my Youtube history. – A Happy Holidays / Japanese Christmas commercial from Segata Sanshiro! (Author’s Note – Segata Sanshiro’s name is somewhat of a word pun and in the commercial when he says “Sega Saturn – SHIRO!” it means “You MUST play Sega Saturn!”)

Tales of Graces F Lands March 2012

Posted in : Anime Movies

(added few months ago!)

Namco Bandai has been quiet about the release date for Tales of Graces F on the PlayStation 3. It's understandable, given the recent video game rush and the company's likely intention to make sure evreything in the game is ready and fine-tuned for localization. Well, I'm happy to report that Tales of Graces F has finally gotten an official launch date here in North America.

Tales of Graces F Lands March 2012

PlayStation 3 owners can expect the RPG to land on March 13, 2012. The announcement was made official in the latest Tales of Graces F trailer. Check it out and see what you can expect from the game when it makes its way to our neck of the woods.

Admittedly, the music in the trailer is kind of cheesy. I had to put on headphones while watching it because I didn't want anyone around me to hear it. That said, I'm so, so, so stoked to play this game! Tales of Graces F will certainly come at a good time. By March, most of us should be done playing the recent bevy of AAA titles, so it's good to know we'll have some time on our hands to dedicate to this lengthy RPG. March 13, on behalf of plenty of other gamers, we'll be waiting for you!

Miraikan uses anime to teach

Posted in : Gossips

(added few months ago!)

The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in Tokyo's Odaiba waterfront district has unveiled a new anime program that is both fun and educational for families.

Miraikan uses anime to teach

The 30-minute film "Encounter with Earth" brings the concept of the carbon cycle closer to the public by way of an animated production shown across a spherical theater and with an easy-to-follow story. The carbon cycle, a series of processes that carbon atoms go through when being recycled as they rotate throughout the biosphere and all living organisms, is key to understanding the concept of climate change.

The story features a young girl named Naoko, modeled on real-life female astronaut Naoko Yamazaki. Strange things start to happen to her as aliens come to Earth to investigate the "Z-atom," which was created in outer space. As the aliens' surveillance camera gets broken and leaks images of the mysterious Z-atom traveling throughout the biosphere, Naoko begins to realize the link between her and other living beings. It's toward the end of the program that viewers learn that the Z-atom is in fact the carbon atom.

FILM: all about anime

Posted in : Anime Movies, Gossips

(added few months ago!)

Anime is a term generally used to refer to Japanese style animated TV shows or films, although the term can be widely used to refer to any sort of animation, including even Disney.

FILM all about anime

Popular anime titles include Bleach and Naruto and films by Studio Ghibli, such as Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro. Japanese Anime, as a genre, bears many similarities to American animation, However, although both are often aimed at children, anime often includes more serious messages, such as environmental issues and ideas perceived by some to be highly philosophical, and sometimes just downright weird concepts, such as a teenage girl being abducted to ‘cat world’ where she must escape from a forced marriage to a cat prince, a plot seen in ‘The Cat Returns’.

Currently a source of much excitement for anime fans is the up and coming release of ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’ - the latest collaboration between Japan’s Studio Ghibli and America’s Disney.

Due to the cultural differences films produced in a combined effort between these two companies are always guaranteed to be filled with entertaining characters and plot lines. ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’ is based on the novel ‘The Borrowers’ by Mary Norton – an English author which could cause the film to showcase a large range of cultural concepts, considering the three varied nationalities involved. The main storyline revolves around the lives of the Clock family: 4in tall people who secretly live in another family’s house, however tumultuous and life-changing events occur when their daughter Arrietty is discovered.

The official trailer has already been released and can be viewed here: http://www.onlineghibli.com/ and the entirety of the film is set to be released in English by Disney on February 17th 2012, although it has already been released in Japan.

A remake of the live action Death Note film is also set to be released shortly, with rumours spreading that Zac Efron will be cast as the main character Light Yagami – a casting choice which many Death Note fans are speculative of, as some find it difficult to imagine the former High School Musical star playing a homicidal maniac/ genius. This version will be directed by Shane Black and produced by Warner Bros, being based solely on the manga version, ignoring both the Japanese anime and live action film.

Other current casting rumours concern the production of the live action version of Akira- the 1998 cyberpunk science fiction anime film which depicts a dystopian Neo- Tokyo. Gary Oldman – from the Dark Knight Trilogy, has been offered the role of the colonel, but has said that he is unsure whether he will accept it, although he said he thought the script was ‘interesting’.

Another controversial role is seen in this live action remake, as the possibility of Kristen Stewart – Twilight’s Bella, playing the female lead Kei. She is currently in ‘advanced talks’ with Warner Bros. Kristen Stewart is a controversial actor in herself; with many ‘Twilight’ fans going crazy over the actress, and others, perhaps those more rational, being less than impressed by her supposedly wooden acting and apparently emotionless demeanour.

STAR TREK Star George Takei Accuses Warner Bros. of Whitewashing AKIRA

Posted in : Gossips

(added few months ago!)

George has not been shy about his concerns for the American remake of Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga, Akira. In April, George began chirping quite a bit when early word came out that Warner Bros. was considering Caucasian actors for Kaneda. In an interview with the Advocate George was asked about the controversy.

STAR TREK Star George Takei Accuses Warner Bros_ of Whitewashing AKIRA

To be fair M. Night Shymalan's The Last Airbender was not even close to being a flop. The film cost a reported $280 million to make and market, and grossed $450 million dollars altogether from domestic and worldwide receipts. The film was trashed by the critics and adults. But, children seemed to enjoy it, and that is whom the movie was made for.
