Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid) is attached to direct Bakugan, an adaptation of the anime series Bakugan Battle Brawlers housed at Universal. The property centers on a group of creatures called Bakugan and the battle brawlers who own them. The Japanese series found its first success in the United States and Canada — three seasons have aired on the Cartoon Network, with a fourth on the way. After spawning a popular strategic card game, the Toy Industry Association named Bakugan Battle Brawlers the “Property of the Year” in 2009.

According to TheWrap, Scott Stuber (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Jon Mone (The Wolfman) will produce along with Ronnen Haray of Spin Master Ltd. Up next for Zwart is a producing credit on Sony’s adaptation of RollerCoaster Tycoon, and one has to imagine he’ll be considered for the director’s chair on the sequel to The Karate Kid.
