After spending the last semester without the use of a projector or a DVD player, the MCTC Anime Club is now showing Japanese anime on Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. at T.3910. Andy Freeman, founder of the Anime club, is glad to have the room changed from H.0300, where the club held their meetings last semester.
Having a bigger room with a projector is “more welcoming,” Freeman said, noting that it is better than gathering around a computer screen. Some anime, or Japanese animation, such as Sailor Moon, Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh, are marketed toward children. However, not all anime are made for kids.
Freeman said he created the club for those who share the interest in anime, and to share the anime culture with anyone who is curious. “Everyone is welcome,” Freeman said. Each session of the Anime Club starts with improvisation games, using themes from popular anime. Afterward the club votes on one or more anime to watch from a selection brought in by the club members.
Anyone can bring an anime for the club to watch. The club prefers to show series rather than full length movies because of time constraints.
The anime club has yet to file their budget for the semester, but they plan to use their budget to buy the rights to publicly show the anime. The club plans to host a game day, playing games that have been used in anime. They would also like to showcase the club members’ art work.
