
As covered on June 17th, the first two films of the live-action trilogy, 20th Century Boys, based off the popular manga by, Naoki Urasawa, filmed at Japan Society, as part of the New York Asian Film Festival. Just announced by New York Anime Festival, they will be debuting the third and final film on the last day of their convention!
Viz Pictures, who have also recently released news that they have licensed the theatre and DVD distribution rights of the films for North America, have teamed up with Subway Cinema and will be screening 20th Century Boys, Part One: The Beginning of the End and Part Two, The Last Hope, on Friday, September 25, 2009, opening day of the festival. 20th Century Boys, Part Three, Redemption, will be shown on the last day of the convention, Sunday, September 27, 2009, just one month after the film's release in Japan.
20th Century Boys, a twenty-two volume manga, has been in America since this February, courtesy of Viz Media, who will be releasing book number four sometime next month. The series is the story of a boy named, Kenji, who in the year of 1969, creates a book with his classmates called, The Book of Prophecy. Now in the year of, 1997, Kenji is beginning to notice strange events happening in his life that happened in the made up world of the book and now, to stop a strange cult led by a man named, Friend, who wishes to fulfill Kenji's final prophecy, Kenji must team up with his classmates to stop the group.
The three films have been directed by, Yukihiko Tsutsumi and have cost around six billion yen to produce, as they try to follow the manga as precisely as possible. The movies have received great reviews from fans and have made more money in theatres in Japan than the Death Note films.
